Ethiopia has a rich cultural, amazing natural beauty and some fantastic history. It's probably most well know for housing the 'Arc of the Covenant' in Aksum but this was probably the least impressive city we visited, if you can imagine that! Another image that is often recollected is starving children but this is far from the truth! The people are warm, welcoming and full of life. The country truly has something for every type of person. The 'top' destinations include Arta Ale (an ACTIVE volcanic lake) and the city of Lalibela with fantastic rock hewn churches. On Lake Tana you can visit monasteries with brilliant paintings. In Tigray there are more rustically hewn churches that require a hike or climb to get to them. The Simein Mountains have views of the escarpment (think beautiful cliff) and lots of wildlife. Addis Ababa gives you the opportunity to run (or at least watch) some of the world's fastest runners go for their morning run in Meskal Square. Plan on spending at least 2 weeks to visit these wonderful cities!
